I warmly welcome you all to this premier institution of Sindh. Government College University Hyderabad is one of the oldest educational institutions of the province. It was established on the left bank of Phuleli on 1st October 1917, by the Theosophical Society, headed by Dr. Annie Besant. This knowledge centre was firstly named as Sindh National Arts College and Prof. Earnest Wood was appointed as its maiden principal. During the course of time, the institution underwent tremendous changes in all spheres. In 1925, it was renamed as Nadir Shah Eduji Dinshaw National College and again within a short span of three years its name was further changed as Daya Ram Gidu Mal National College. After partition (1948), it was renamed as Government College Hyderabad. Dr. Adrian Durate was appointed as its first post-independence principal. Finally, with the efforts of college staff, this institution has been upgraded to the status of a University; thus its present name is Government College University Hyderabad and I am writing as its first Vice Chancellor.
The college has contributed a great deal in producing lots of inspirational characters who occupy leading positions in their respective fields. This institution can proudly claim to be the cradle of knowledge due to its role in the pre and post independence era. Government College University Hyderabad has always remained the hub of seasonal activities to provide young learners a launching pad to grow mature, professionally, mentally, physically, morally and socially. A large number of great personalities like Mazhar-ul-Haq Siddiqui (Former. V.C University of Sindh), Dr. Ishrat-ul-Haq (Former Governor State Bank of Pakistan), Pir Mazhar-ul-Haq (Former Education Minister Sindh), Justice Ameer Hani Muslim, Air Commodore (Retd) Shabbir Ahmed, Muhammad Idrees Rajput (Ex. Secretary Irrigation, Sindh), Dadi Leelawati (Renowned Educationist), Qamar Ahmed (Sports Correspondent, B.B.C), Mr. Qazi Asad Abid (Ex. Member, National Assembly) and Mr. Abdullah Shah (Ex. Chief Minister Sindh) are some of the proud products of this institution.
Despite general downfall in the standard of education across the country, this institution has been greatly successful in maintaining high standards of education and continuing to impart quality teaching to thousands of students of Sindh. It has not only kept its past glory intact but also continues to be a model educational institution in the province at present.
Now, after upgradation to a higher seat of learning as a university, it will not only maintain its past glory but also try to meet the international standards. This institution completed its 100 years in October 2017. The whole region celebrated its centenary. The college management organized number of programmes throughout the 100th year. The centenary celebrations started with a Torch Rally to symbolize light as enlightenment. Thus, the mission of this cradle of knowledge was reiterated with the torch light. The university management is committed to add more and more feathers of honour and distinction in the crown of this great nursery of scholars.
