Vice-Chancellor's Message

Prof. Dr. Nasiruddin Shaikh

Founder Vice-Chancellor

I warmly welcome you all to this premier institution of Sindh. Government College University Hyderabad is one of the oldest educational institutions of the province. It was established on the left bank of Phuleli on 1st October 1917, by the Theosophical Society, headed by Dr. Annie Besant. This knowledge centre was firstly named as Sindh National Arts College and Prof. Earnest Wood was appointed as its maiden principal. During the course of time, the institution underwent tremendous changes in all spheres. In 1925, it was renamed as Nadir Shah Eduji Dinshaw National College and again within a short span of three years its name was further changed as Daya Ram Gidu Mal National College. After partition (1948), it was renamed as Government College Hyderabad. Dr. Adrian Durate was appointed as its first post-independence principal. Finally, with the efforts of college staff, this institution has been upgraded to the status of a University; thus its present name is Government College University Hyderabad and I am writing as its first Vice Chancellor.
